FMC backs practical approach to pest management

PEST management plays a vital role in agriculture as it protects crops from insects, weeds and diseases. It is important growers and agronomists are confident in taking the necessary measures to manage these challenges.
Over the past month, agricultural sciences company FMC Australasia has been running a series of practical Integrated Pest Management workshops across South Australia and Victoria with Dr Paul Horne and Rebecca Addison from IPM Technologies.
IPM is a practical approach to controlling pests by combining different methods, such as monitoring and use of beneficial insects and targeted sprays, to keep crops healthy.
This approach aims to reduce unnecessary pesticide use while maintaining effective pest control and protecting the environment.
The workshops were held to educate and help growers, agronomists and advisers better understand the core principles of IPM and make more informed pest management decisions in the paddock.
FMC area business manager South Australia Jock Neumann said the workshops were about much more than selling products.
“As an industry, we’re facing increasing pressure from insecticide resistance, changing pest pressures and the need to preserve the tools we already have available,” Mr Neumann said.
“We believe education and stewardship are an important part of the solution, helping growers understand how cultural, biological and chemical controls can work together as part of a broader IPM approach.”
Mr Neumann said that the sessions have generated “great discussion” among growers and advisers who were keen to learn more.
“Our aim is to give growers the knowledge and confidence to make informed pest management decisions,” he said.
“In crops like lentils, where pest pressure can change quickly, a strong IPM strategy plays an important role in protecting both yield and crop quality, both now and into the future.”
