Baking up an interest for the Copper Coast Show

COOKERY has long been a staple of country shows, and organisers of this year’s Copper Coast Show are hoping to attract both experienced bakers and first-time entrants when they host an information session at the Kadina showgrounds on Sunday, June 21.
Cookery committee member Dianne Correll said the section catered for everyone, with classes designed for novice cooks right through to seasoned competitors.
The session would give people the chance to meet others with similar interests, learn new skills and ask questions, while also seeing how exhibits are prepared and presented, Mrs Correll said.
Experienced exhibitor Dulcie Barker will again be involved, bringing decades of knowledge after successfully competing at many Yorke Peninsula and Royal Adelaide shows.
Local cake decorator Belinda Smith will demonstrate how to make a no-bake “hack” cake. Mrs Correll said one of the section’s strengths was the interaction between competitors, judges and the public.
“Cake decorating remains popular despite fewer people entering the section in recent years, with many still enjoying the hobby through classes and community groups,” she said.
“The Copper Coast Show is seeking more exhibitors, particularly in the decorated cake classes.
“It is always a favourite among the showgoers, as they appreciate the time and effort that goes into creating each cake.”
There is also a well-supported special needs cooking section, with four classes available.
Competitors can enter a wide range of categories, with classes to suit different interests and abilities, including a junior section. Mrs Correll said the time and effort exhibitors put into their entries helped create a better spectacle for visitors.
“Everyone is welcome to enter the cookery competitions, with the June 21 information afternoon providing a great opportunity for newcomers to experience what is involved.”
Entry in the cookery categories is free; entries close at 5pm on Wednesday, August 12; the show will be held Saturday and Sunday, August 15-16.
