DESMOND'S Meat Service, Kadina, snagged a bunch of awards at the Australian Meat Industry Council Regional Sausage King Competition, held in Port Pirie late last month.
The widely-loved butcher shop claimed first prize for its traditional Australian pork sausages, bung fritz, mettwurst, bacon, and cooked sausage in casing (for its cheese and jalapeno kransky).
Desmond's also won second prize for its tasty burgers and received thirds for its crumbed patties, lamb and kangaroo burgers, and boneless leg ham.
Manager Robert Waters said the great results proved Desmond's Meat Service was still the best choice around for top-quality meat and smallgoods.
"A lot of the recipes I'm using are all my own now, so it's really great to have won these awards, especially for the smallgoods which are a real passion of mine," he said.
"That said, it is a complete team effort, and everybody here plays a part in what we do, from boning to manufacturing to cooking, and I thank all of our staff for their efforts.
"We have a loyal repeat customer base and without them we wouldn't be here.
"I try to put out the best product I can and if not for our clientele enjoying the product, and their support, none of this would be possible."
Robert said he was particularly pleased to have won many of the major awards on the night.
"Everybody wants to win for their pork sausages, fritz, mettwurst and bacon," he said.
"Smallgoods has always been my passion, and all the first places we got are the products I'm really passionate about, particularly fritz being a South Australian icon.
"Winning for our mettwurst was big as well, because that is my recipe which I have worked on for several years.
"We source all of our pork from Ant-Hill Piggery at Long Plains, and it's just a fantastic product, and that helped us a lot because we won for our pork sausages and a lot of our smallgoods are also predominantly pork meat."
