FOR more than 40 years, Calley Courier Services — Yorke Peninsula’s oldest independent freight operator — has focused on delivering the best possible service to the region.
Over time, Calley’s has continued to evolve to meet the changing needs of locals.
Established in 1979 by the late Robin Calley, the business began with a single mail run from Kadina to Alford and Tickera.
A second run to Ardrossan and Sandilands soon followed.
Continuing the family legacy, Calley Courier Services is now operated by Robin’s wife Tina, together with their sons Brett and Leigh.
Coming from a long line of drivers, Brett said that, although he officially began driving at 16, he had been in the delivery van since the age of 4.
“We’ve done over five million kilometres on YP,” he said.
Today, the business operates around 30 vehicles and employs about 20 staff members.
Reflecting on the past four decades, Brett said a career highlight was transporting the oldest headstone from Moonta Cemetery to Adelaide for refurbishment and replication about four years ago. A cast was made using upgraded materials, and the replica was returned to the cemetery, while the original is now on display at the Moonta Mines Museum.
Brett said he loves his job and can’t imagine doing anything else.
“I see it as helping someone out,” he said.
With a focus on improving service, the business recently purchased a truck to complement its fleet of vans.
“We were picking up more pallets and it was hard with the van and trailers,” Brett said.
“So now we can handle more of the bigger stuff.”
The new addition is helping the business deliver and collect more freight for local customers.
With the busy season approaching, Calley Courier Services has also introduced a same-day delivery option — something Brett said had never been done before on Yorke Peninsula.
“The freight comes out of Adelaide at noon and then, when the drivers reach a certain point, they split off in different directions,” he said.
“If something is received after midday, the delivery will be made the next morning.”
