SOUTH Australia has just endured one of the most severe dry periods in its history and, while some regions have finally welcomed rain, the path to recovery is slow.

For many farming families, the financial and emotional impacts remain front and centre.

In response, wellbeing campaign Weather it Together has been launched to support rural communities through the toughest of seasons.

Built with farmers and for farmers, the campaign centres on keeping connected, focusing on what you can control, getting active and asking for help.

Associate Professor Kate Gunn from Adelaide University, who is leading the campaign, said farmers have been natural problem-solvers for generations.

“But when the problems are something beyond their control, like the weather, of course it can be overwhelming,” she said.

“None of us are invincible and no one should feel they have to face tough times alone.”

Kate said the campaign’s key strategies had been shown to make a difference when times are tough.

“They may sound like simple actions, but farmers asked us to keep it simple, and ironically that’s the first thing we tend to give up when we’re feeling overwhelmed,” she said.

“Research from past droughts shows the emotional impact often peaks after the worst of the dry has passed.”

The campaign features local stories, voices and landscapes, with generous contributions including from the Williams family, of Elliston, and the Telfers, of Ungarra.

“These are real people, real places and real stories — that’s what gives the campaign its strength,” Kate said.

“You’re not alone.

“Whatever the season brings, we’ll weather it together.”
