Volunteers urged to join CFS probe
2 min read

VOLUNTEER firefighters are being urged to speak up about the Country Fire Service without fear of reprimand, by taking part in an inquiry.

Participants can provide verbal or written submissions to the South Australian Parliament's Inquiry into CFS Volunteer Management and Support.

Written submissions close on Friday, June 28.

The Standing Committee on Occupational Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation is inquiring into CFS investigations of volunteer conduct; the ability of volunteers to voice concerns and CFS responsiveness; and other relevant matters, including CFS facilities and equipment.

Emergency services opposition spokesperson Adrian Pederick said he had been contacted by many people who were glad they could speak out safely.

“This is a great opportunity for past and current volunteers and staff to voice their experiences with the CFS in the spirit of improving the organisation,” Mr Pederick said.

"We know there are serious issues within the CFS that are being kept quiet.

“Those making a submission can ask the committee that it be kept confidential. A request to make a submission in person can also be made”

Regional SA opposition assistant spokesperson Ben Hood said he was pleased that there had been some movement on the inquiry, given it was referred to the committee almost four months ago.

“I urge anyone interested in the support mechanisms and processes for volunteers within the CFS to consider making a submission,” he said.

"Our CFS volunteers are the ones who put their lives at risk each time they are called to an incident. They deserve to be provided with the support and amenities they need to protect our communities, but most of all they deserve to be listened to.

"I have heard from many involved with the CFS that they are terrified of speaking up and this goes to the crux of the problem.

"Volunteers and staff feel they don't have the power to speak about issues they see on the ground and when they do, they are punished.

"It is my true hope that this inquiry will enable genuine, proper and thorough investigation into the issues CFS volunteers have raised over the past few months."

“I look forward to working with my committee colleagues on this inquiry as we hear directly from the CFS command and, importantly, the volunteers themselves.

“We want feedback on the current structures for volunteer support and the opportunities that may exist to strengthen that support for our brave CFS volunteers around the state.”

All submissions will be made publicly available unless otherwise determined by the committee. Participants can request confidentiality.

To make a submission, email committee secretary Shane Hilton, at: OccHealthCommittee@parliament.sa.gov.au or write to GPO Box 572, Adelaide SA 5001.
