The silent threat facing Grey: why we can’t ignore kidney health

REGIONAL South Australians are known for their resilience — caring for crops, livestock and neighbours with unwavering commitment.
But Federal Member for Grey Tom Venning warns that one critical responsibility is often overlooked: our own health.
“We’re proud of our ‘she’ll be right’ attitude, but when it comes to chronic kidney disease, that mindset can be deadly,” Mr Venning said.
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is often called a “silent disease” for a frightening reason — you can lose up to 90 per cent of your kidney function before experiencing any symptoms.
“By the time you feel unwell, the damage is often permanent,” Mr Venning said.
The statistics are alarming.
More than 2.5 million Australians live with CKD, but only 10 per cent are diagnosed.
Closer to home, in the Grey electorate, the gap is even more concerning — Kidney Health Australia estimates that, while 1912 people are diagnosed, up to 18,863 may be living with the disease undetected.
“That’s nearly 19,000 people — our friends, neighbours and loved ones — walking around with a serious condition they don’t even know they have,” Mr Venning said.
To help close this gap, a free health forum will be held in Kadina at 11.30am on Monday, December 8.
The event, hosted in partnership with Kidney Health Australia, will be held at the Copper Coast Sport and Leisure Centre, 1 Doswell Terrace.
“I encourage everyone to come along,” Mr Venning said.
“This is an opportunity to get the facts and protect your health,” Mr Venning said.
