Support available in drought-affected regions
MENTAL HEALTH... Linda McCabe has recently joined the Mind Australia Drought Recovery Program team.

MIND Australia has launched a new drought recovery program, supported by funding from the South Australian Government.

Port Vincent local Linda McCabe, a former registered nurse with experience in climate disaster recovery, joins a team of three workers placed in regions most affected by drought.

Ms McCabe is responsible for the Yorke and Upper North regions.

“Those that live in the regions are resilient,” she said.

“People in this region (Yorke Peninsula) are so connected to drought-impacted areas.

“Climate events such as drought can impact people in different ways.

“It can cause financial stress, loss of livestock and crops, and it can impact people’s employment and business.”

The pressures faced by farmers and families can lead to grief, anger, depression, social isolation, relationship difficulties and sleep problems.

It may also affect physical health, reduce concentration and lead to a loss of interest in daily activities.

The program offers free one-on-one or group support for anyone aged 16 and over living in regional or remote areas.

Qualified, experienced counsellors provide support through outreach visits, phone calls or meetings in community spaces.

“The services are tailored to individuals to focus on what they need,” Ms McCabe said.

A GP or Medicare referral isn’t required, and the team can help people access more formal counselling if needed.

“Self-care is critical to our wellbeing,” she said.

“Long-term recovery can take years.

“It’s different for everyone and takes a heavy toll on health and wellbeing.”

Ms McCabe said even a quiet conversation beside a ute with a member of the drought recovery team can make a difference.

Mind Australia’s Drought Recovery Program is funded until July.
