Mid YP tennis hits back

Mid Yorke Peninsula Tennis Association will come out of recess with new rules reviving the competition.

The Friday night competition went into recess in 2020 as two teams could not find enough players and the association was considering folding this season with not enough player interest.

The association held a special meeting in early August to gauge the level of support before making a final decision at its annual general meeting in September.

Members voted to reduced teams from eight players to four.

Association president Brad Baker said he was pleased the competition can go ahead this season.

"There will be four people per team, we will start on Friday, October 15, and will play five matches before Christmas and five after," Baker said.

"There will be six teams in the competition ... we are pleased because it wasn't looking good at one stage.

"As soon as we brought in the change to four people per team it made it easier for the clubs to get a team together."

Teams include Sandilands, Arthurton, Maitland, Winulta, Pine Point and Ardrossan.

"The northern (Yorke Peninsula) association has also relaxed the rule on allowing players to play in our association on a Friday night," Baker said.

"People in that association were only allowed to play a certain amount in other associations so this will help us with fill-in players.

"We really just want people to play, we have tried to work it so two teams play at one venue to make it more social so Maitland and Arthurton will be the main courts.

"This is because we can play on four courts at those two venues so each week two teams will be playing there."
