Spalding update to reveal latest from crop trials
WIN AGAINST WEEDS... Agronomist Beth Humphris from Elders Jamestown will talk about how to manage problematic weeds.

THE latest grains research and development outcomes with potential for positive impacts on-farm will be presented at Spalding on Thursday, February 6.

The Grains Research and Development Corporation update will be held at the Spalding District Hall, with doors open from 8.30am for a 9am start.

The event is scheduled to finish at 1pm.

Guest speaker Sean Mason of Agronomy Solutions will explore the impacts of the 2024 season on phosphorous and nitrogen availability and how to best plan for the season ahead.

Participants will also discover how to leverage existing chemistry when managing problematic weeds such as fleabane when Elders Jamestown agronomist Beth Humphris highlights preliminary findings from locally based, GRDC-funded trials focused on summer weed control.

Given the season, dry sowing and soil moisture levels are front of mind for growers.

Michael Eyres from Field Systems will provide insights into the decision-making process and some key learnings from one of the driest seasons on record.

To deepen understanding of herbicide residues and the potential impacts on next season’s crop, Nicolas Dimopoulos from Southern Cross University will identify the key residues to look for and the implications for plant-back periods.

Blake Gontar, of the South Australian Research and Development Institute, will help participants uncover the hidden costs of root diseases in pulse crops.

He will explore the impacts of root diseases in the 2024 season and explain how to take a proactive approach to management in 2025.
