IT has been an action-packed first three years for the Bond Store, Wallaroo.

Opening its Owen Street doors just before the pandemic hit, the microbrewery and distillery has just reached another huge milestone.

Two new fermenters have just been installed, boosting the brewing capacity of the premises.

“A global pandemic definitely wasn’t in our business plan,” owners Derek and Nicole Matthewman said.

“Because we run two businesses (group accommodation cu@Wallaroo and cu2), when we were looking at opening the Bond Store, we thought we could rely on our other income if things were tough to start with.

“But to have both so heavily impacted, as well as the impact it had on our staff, was a really scary time.”

Derek and Nicole said the support of their customers has been vital to their survival, from the start of Covid-19 when people came and purchased products, and repeat visitors.

“Perhaps we also opened at the right time, because there’s been a clear push for people to travel intrastate and we’re seeing people recognise how great it is in Wallaroo,” they said.

“When we were working on our plans, it was hard to know how we were going to go when there were already six pubs in the town, but there was a need for something a bit different and we’re seeing that still.”

Derek said the Bond Store’s newest additions, the fermenters, will mean their brewing capacity is four times as much as it is currently.

“We’ve also just finished building a coolroom which is three times our current space to store all our kegs and cans,” they said.

“It’s really exciting, especially coming up to a very busy time of year.

“This will really allow us to increase our can production, which with seven medals this year at the Royal Adelaide Beer Awards, has been incredibly popular.”

Not only are the beers cold and the gins refreshing, the Bond Store’s menu has something for everyone.

“We have staff from six different countries working with us, bringing great flavours from all over the world,” Derek and Nicole said.
