RAIN can be a curse around harvest time.

As crops begin to dry out, they lose their ability to repel water and start to act like a sponge, absorbing rain and dew.

This can lead to pod shatter, staining, wrinkling, yield loss and downgrading of seed quality.

Enviroshield, from Agspec, has a unique polymer formulation extracted from natural plant materials that repels water from pods pre-harvest.

“Lentils and other pod crops also have ripe and immature pods at the same time, making the timing for harvest difficult,” Agspec business manager Ian Boothey said.

“Enviroshield will assist the early pods to hold on, resulting reduced loss of seed and fewer immature seeds being harvested.

“Enviroshield forms a unique elastic semi-permeable film over pods when applied at the beginning of maturity.

“This film acts like the cuticle, allowing moisture to pass out the membrane but not in.

“This allows the crop to dry for harvest while protecting it from water entry, reducing splitting and maintaining seed quality.”

Enviroshield minimises seed damage from moisture events pre-harvest, which in turn reduces pod shatter and optimises the yield.

“It also allows the crop to mature evenly, ensuring full seed development of later pods and improving harvest flexibility,” Ian said.

“Enviroshield is not a magic bullet; losses will still occur with extreme events like hail, large droplets or very strong winds.

“Where the pre-harvest conditions are expected to be wet and wild, the application of Enviroshield will provide huge assistance in repelling water; this dramatically reduces pod shatter, pod drop, wrinkling and seed damage.”
