National Sorry Day

TODAY, May 26, is National Sorry Day where Australia commemorates the Stolen Generations who were forcibly taken from their families by colonial powers.

For many stolen generations survivors, Sorry Day is an acknowledgement of their experiences and the continuing impact of forced removal from community and family.

This day also marks the 28th anniversary of the tabling of the Bringing them home report in to Parliament in 1997.

The Bringing them home inquiry was a landmark truth-telling process which brought to light the extent of Australia's stolen generations history and shared this with the nation.

The report made over 50 recommendations to address the impacts on survivors, however, only six per cent of the recommendations have been fully implemented according to a recent report by the Healing Foundation — despite the report being tabled nearly three decades ago.

The 2025 Sorry Day theme of "we cannot wait another generation" aimed to highlight the urgency of acting on this report in 2025.
