FIRST UP... Skin cancer examiner Carol Barnes (right) welcomes Brenda Glassey, who had the first appointment when the mobile Lions Skin Cancer Screening Unit visited Moonta in June.

LIONS Medical Research Foundation's mobile skin cancer unit was booked out when it visited Moonta on Saturday and Sunday, June 4-5.

This important, and popular, public service was made available free to the community via the Moonta Lions Club, president Lorraine Darling said.

A total of 145 people were screened, 56 males and 89 females.

The examiners found 75 suspect lesions, of which 50 appeared to be life-threatening.

This led to 42 (29 per cent) of those examined being referred to their GPs for further investigation.

Forty per cent (58) of the people examined at Moonta had never been screened for skin cancer before; seven had been screened within the past six months, 16 within six to 12 months, and 63 (43 per cent) more than 12 months ago.
