Your View: Adolescent mental health services needed

AS part of my SACE Stage 2 external health assignment, I have been researching the mental health services available and accessible to adolescents on Yorke Peninsula.

Sadly, it has been brought to my attention there is an extremely limited number of services providing support for this particular age group of people, 14-17. This is unacceptable in 2020.

Adolescents in this age group are not categorised as adults, and therefore cannot be seen by adult counsellors. Adding to that, this age group is also considered too old to access child mental health services.

To make matters worse, upon visiting their local GP for a referral to counselling services, many people aged 14-17 are referred onto counselling services in Adelaide, or online support services such as Lifeline or BeyondBlue. This simply isn’t practical due to many things such as travel cost/time as well as the preferred need for face-to-face support.

This is something I feel very strongly about, especially due to the current climate. I wholeheartedly believe more mental health support services are needed in the YP region to support adolescents.
