Local farmers no longer bring home the bacon

FARMERS Bethany Paterson and John Duka have been forced to close their piggery, near Bute, saying the Australian pig industry had finally taken its toll on the business of 50 years.

The last of their pigs were taken to market last week, ending the family business they hoped their sons would one day inherit.

The farm now houses 12 empty Ecoshelters valued at $60,000 each — a “pig ghost town”, according to Bethany.
