DURING the Cold War era, orphaned chess prodigy Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) struggles with addiction in a quest to become the greatest chess player in the world in The Queen’s Gambit.

I had scrolled past this limited series on a few occasions and finally gave in when it appeared as Netflix’s number one viewed series in Australia — and I’m glad I did.

The series starts in a girls’ orphanage where a 9-year-old Beth, whose mother has died in a car crash, meets friend Jolene, as well as orphanage manager Helen Deardorff and orphanage custodian Mr Shaibel, who gives Beth her first chess lesson.
