BARUNGA West Council has secured $321,860 in state government funding to upgrade electrical infrastructure at the council-owned Broughton Bayside Caravan Park in Port Broughton.

The grant, awarded under Stream One of the Enabling Infrastructure Program through the Thriving Regions Fund, will support replacement of ageing overhead power lines with a code-compliant underground
system.

The upgrade will increase network capacity, improve reliability and support long-term redevelopment of the park.

Mayor Leonie Kerley said securing external funding reduced pressure on ratepayers while strengthening a key tourism asset.

“Reliable electrical infrastructure is fundamental to maintaining and operating the park safely and efficiently,” Mayor Kerley said.

“This upgrade ensures the site can meet current compliance standards, handle increased demand and support future redevelopment without overloading the network.”

The total project budget is $459,800, with the state government covering about 70 per cent of the cost.

Council will contribute $137,940, including contingency.

Works are scheduled for completion by December 2027, with construction planned for the 2027-28 financial year.

Mayor Kerley said the benefits would extend beyond the park.

“Tourism plays an important role in Port Broughton’s economy,” she said.

“Strengthening essential services at Broughton Bayside Caravan Park supports local retailers, hospitality venues and service providers by improving our capacity to accommodate visitors and regional events.

“Improved reliability and safety also support park residents and the wider coastal community.”
