SOUTH Australian smokers are encouraged to put away their cigarettes and vapes for SA Health’s fourth annual Quit Your Way in May initiative.

The campaign emphasises the importance of smokers quitting in a way that works for them.

To register for support on your quitting journey, especially during May, head to quityourwayinmay.com.au.

The website has a variety of resources including evidence-based quitting strategies, quitting tools such as the My QuitBuddy app and distraction techniques to help combat cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

Vaping cessation resources are also linked on the QYWIM website.

“Establishing the May 1 quit date provides platforms for participants to quit alongside other community members, and celebrates their quit smoking attempts with lots of encouragement,” a QYWIM spokesperson said.

“People can sign up for regular support emails that offer advice about quitting smoking, distraction techniques and words of encouragement to set participants up for ultimate success.

“Registrants can also join the Quit your way Facebook support group, which has been reported by previous participants as being a highly valuable source of support.”

SA Health also encourages participants to visit their doctor for support to quit smoking.

The 2023 QYWIM campaign achieved 550 registrations and more than 9000 visits to its website.

“After doing Quit Your Way In May, I’ve been able to almost cut out the cigarettes,” a 2023 quitter said.

“I’m still having the odd one here and there, especially under stressful times and, working in radio, there’s plenty of them.

“What have you got to lose from giving it a go yourself?

“The long-term gains have been well worth it for me, both financially and physically.”

Of participants surveyed one month after the 2023 event, 86 per cent reported they had made a quit attempt, 11 per cent had reduced the amount they smoked, and three per cent had not made a quit attempt or cut down.

And, of those who had made a quit attempt, 69 per cent said they remained smoke free.

More than 90 per cent said they would recommend QYWIM to a friend.

The QYWIM website’s most commonly used tools in 2023 were the registrant support emails, smoking cost calculator, quitting plan and distractions tool.
