SINCE starting IOJ Aerial Photography in 1977, Ian Oswald-Jacobs has photographed most broadacre farms in Australia twice, many three times.

Ian, who has family connections to Curramulka, has been a self-taught photographer and commercial pilot for more than 45 years.

IOJ Aerial Photography is based from his family farm near Apsley in Victoria’s West Wimmera region.

“Aerial journeys across the Australian continent in my Cessna 210 are equivalent to circumnavigating the globe 74 times,” Ian said.

“The trusty Cessna 210 is on its seventh engine and has long-range fuel tanks to accomplish the necessary long hops across the continent.

“My passion for photography and flying has meant I’ve captured more than half a million spectacular aerial images.”

Ian’s formal training includes a Diploma in Agriculture (Roseworthy, 1981) and Graduate Certificate in Environmental Management (University of Adelaide, 1987).

“I am a licensed commercial pilot, with CASA dispensations to fly as low as 18 metres (50 feet) whilst engaged in photographic operations,” Ian said.

“I have recently become involved in the documentation of the coastal caves of the Nullarbor.

“It also resulted going over the edge of The Great Australian Bight on a rope to explore inside these caves.”

lan’s photography has featured on Australian television, including ABC TV, 7.30 Report, A Current Affair, Today and Coast Australia.

His work is featured in the coastal books of Cape York Peninsula, and the Bungle Bungle Range (Purnululu) and Kakadu and Nitmiluk National Park guidebooks.
