EGLINTON Bros Pty Ltd started in Swan Reach, run by brothers Tom and Doug Eglinton, in 1946.
The company began by stocking and servicing Chamberlain machinery as well as Austin and Morris vehicles, which became BMC and, later, Leyland.
Eglinton Bros decided to move to Maitland after the River Murray flooded in 1956 and covered the workshop with water.
In 1957, the Eglinton brothers and their families moved to Maitland and spent several months building new premises from the ground up.
A merger between Chamberlain Industries and John Deere in 1972 meant that Eglinton Bros became a John Deere dealer and the business continues to be a John Deere dealer on YP to this day.
Eglinton Bros is also a franchise holder for MacDon platforms, Bourgault tillage and seeding equipment, Coolamon chaser bins, spreaders and mother bins, Challenge loaders, BP oils and lubricants and Agmaster products, along with a number of smaller product lines.
Eglinton Bros managing director Malcolm Eglinton began as an apprentice in his father’s workshop in 1970.
Malcolm’s son and co-owner Benjamin followed suit as an apprentice in 1996 and is now a senior field technician.
“We have employees who have been with us for many years, including our longest serving staff member, our foreman John Smart, who has been with us since he started his apprenticeship in 1974,” Malcolm said.
“Senior technician Thomas Drysdale has been with us for 42 years.
“All of the employees at Eglinton Bros are valued staff members who show a high degree of loyalty to Eglinton Bros, and our many valued customers, as well as a willingness to assist and provide service.
“We appreciate our customer base and the business the local community brings since Eglinton Bros was established on Yorke Peninsula.
“We have faced many interesting challenges during the decades we have been in business.
“We are believers in the Lord Jesus and have found the God whom we serve has sustained us through the various trials we face in business and life in general.
“Eglinton Bros Pty Ltd recognises the blessing Maitland and the wider district has been to them and share with the people the celebration of 150 years.”
