Battle for top spot in Australian Business Week

STUDENTS at Kadina Memorial School learned just how competitive business can be during the school’s annual Australian Business Week last month.

Teams showcased their final business concepts during a trade display at Copper Coast Sport and Leisure Centre, Kadina, with the public invited to vote for their favourite.

Teacher Georgia Wells said students had to be resourceful throughout the week to bring their businesses to life.

“ABW provides year 11 students with an opportunity to collaborate and develop a business — in our case a cafe — over one week,” she said.

“It is an intense week, with students tasked to complete 12 quarters of finance decisions and case studies on the ABW computer simulation along with a 30-second advertisement, company report and trade display to share with the school community.

“The initial chaos of determining a theme and assigning roles eventually settles and we get to see the different talents of our students.

“Getting to observe students sell their cafe at the trade display is so rewarding and often, there are a few students who lean into the day and really engage the students and family who come along.

“My favourite part of the entire week is walking around to each group and seeing different students take on leadership roles.”

ABW is recognised by SACE as a Community Developed Program, with students eligible to receive 10 credits towards their Certificate of Education for successful participation in the event.
