CELEBRATING local heritage and history is something the National Trust SA Moonta branch does on a daily basis.
The branch is run by dedicated volunteers and is responsible for the Moonta Mines National Heritage area including the Old Railway Station, museum, sweet shop, tourist train, history centre and cottage.
“We’re so very pleased to be involved in the Sir Richard Williams RAAF Centenary Celebrations,” tourist officer Glenys Blacker said.
“We’d like to extend a very large congratulations to Robyn Knight and her committee for the work they have put in towards this effort, both in regards to fundraising for the statue and planning the celebration.”
Moonta is home to some wonderful historical figures and the rich history of the area’s Cornish settlers.
“It’s always important to recognise the work of those who came before us and helped turned the area into what it is today,” Ms Blacker said.
“When you visit the museum, you’ll see and learn more about other famous people from Moonta as well.
“The Moonta Mines National Heritage Area will open for business on Sunday, the train will be running, as the sweet shop and other venues as well.”
It’s a great time to learn more about the history of the area as the planning progresses for the Moonta Mines National Heritage Place.
National Trust will host Nelson Surveyors as they complete a laser survey demonstration on historic sites this Friday.
“We really want to bring the community, businesses and individuals along with us over the journey to develop this national heritage place over the next couple of years,” Ms Blacker said.
“From time to time there will be opportunities for various groups to get involved and this is one of those times.
“The laser survey is the first step in our planning for the future, it will open up new doors to the way we can present this National Heritage Place with conservation of the buildings and new tourism experiences to enjoy.”
You can now book your train rides and museum trips online, while vouchers are also available for the sweet shop — making the perfect Christmas presents.
Visitors to the area can also check out the digital Moonta Heritage Walking Trail through the SA Heritage mobile phone app.
