CARRICOWIE Poll Merino Stud, Brentwood — run by Bronte and Lee Blyth — was established in 1984.
The Blyths have since gained a reputation for producing massive fast-growing genetics without compromising on wool cut.
“We use an extensive artificial insemination program every year to achieve our objectives, which are to breed big-framed, heavy wool cutting sheep with bright, white wool — in essence, a dual-purpose animal in every sense,” Bronte said.
This dedication to improving their stock has resulted in a number of Royal Adelaide Show championship ribbons and awards since Carricowie started showing.
“It is more critical to be cutting as much wool per head as ever,” Bronte said.
“Producers who have stuck with sheep are certainly reaping the rewards of their investment now.
“The strong mutton market at the moment makes self-replacing merinos a very profitable enterprise.
“In my opinion, there’s never been a more exciting time to be a Merino or Poll Merino breeder.”
At Carricowie’s 2021 on-property auction, 50 of a possible 59 rams were sold at an average of $1502 and a top price of $5800.
This year, Carricowie is offering 80 well-grown young rams, 14-15 months old, in the main auction, with another 50 available by private selection. All have been paddock reared.
All rams are Ovine Johne’s vaccinated and brucellosis accredited.
“After a hard start, the up and coming sires are showing great potential,” Bronte said.
“We look forward to welcoming clients and visitors to our inspection day on Tuesday, August 9, and our 27th on-property auction on Tuesday, August 16.”
