AS football, netball and hockey seasons approach us, our teams are training hard to put their best foot (and face) forward.

Good preparation isn’t just about fitness; it is also about gear that can protect you from serious injury. Enter the unsung hero of sports equipment —the mouthguard.

A mouthguard is a removable appliance that is worn over the upper teeth during training and matches, then easily removed straight after.

It absorbs and spreads impact, helping prevent chipped teeth, split lips, sore jaws, and awkward post-game dental bills.

Basically, it keeps your smile in one piece so you can focus on scoring goals, not calling your dentist.

There are two main types: dentist-made and chemist-bought. 

Dentist-made mouthguards are custom-fitted for comfort, durability, and top-level protection. 

They stay put, let you breathe properly, make talking easier and will not fall out mid-sprint (always a bonus).

Chemist mouthguards, often called “boil-and-bite,” are cheaper but looser, a bit like playing sports in shoes two sizes too big — bulky, awkward, and less protective.

For athletes who value comfort, safety, and their winning smile, dentist-made guards are the gold standard.
