The Northern Yorke Peninsula Veteran Golfers Association members ventured to the Port Broughton Golf Club for the inaugural Ross Partington Memorial Shield contest last Thursday, August 10.
Ross, who passed away on June 30, 2022, was a long-time member of the Port Broughton Golf Club and a fierce advocate and tireless worker for the NYPVGA.
Club stalwart Alan Steff noted at the presentations Ross would have been chuffed to know his best mate John Spackman was the shield’s inaugural winner with a score of 38 points.
A grade winner was John Poulton with 37, with Darryl Chynoweth runner-up on 36, on a countback from David Wall.
B grade went to Ross Argent also on 37, with Brian Searle second on 36 and Steve Busch on 33.
C grade was won by Greg Bone who scored 37, on a countback from Phil Gray, and Michael Crkovnik in third with 35 points, on a countback from Barry Brealey.
There was a tie for the Seniors Award between Jim Smith and Bronte Baker.
NTP: 8, Phil Gray; 11, John Poulton; 12, Ross Argent; 15, Leon Bennier; 17, John Poulton.
Rick Haase won the long putt on 9 and Darryl Chynoweth won it on 18.
Birdies were the order of the day with Alan Steff, Kelly Stott, Rick Haase, Darryl Chynoweth, Rob Arbon, Grant Donovan, Leon Bennier, Dave Wall, David “Doc” Holman, John Poulton, Jim Smith, Neil Burford, Tony Jamieson and Ross Argent all winning a ball.
Four-pointers went to Vivienne Lambert, Greg Bone and Michael Crkovnik.
Don Nottle took home the President’s Award.
The card winners were Grant Donovan, Daryl Dietman, Gary Koch, David “Doc” Holman and Geoff Tapps.
A big call out to the catering staff for preparing a great luncheon for the players and of course DC behind the bar.
Next game is at Minlaton Golf Club for the second round of the NYP v SYP Vets Challenge, 9.30am for a 10am hit-off, Wednesday, August 16.
