Most people’s garden sheds are used to store tools and the lawnmower but at Moonta emerging hip hop band, Immortal Mindsets, has transformed a backyard shed into a recording studio.

From here the trio: Lucas “Kwotes” Gordon, Jacob “Kullas” Flavel and Brendan “BriggzyB” Briggs; hope to begin realising their dreams of becoming the next big thing in hip hop music.

Under the guidance of manager, Scott Carmichael, Immortal Mindsets has already recorded seven songs and hopes to release an album by February.

The band formed about six months ago when sitting around in the lounge room the boys came up with “The Moonta Song”.

“We had a microphone with a Chux dishcloth taped on the front of it to try and stop the distortion and it was balanced on a CD rack,” Lucas recalled.

“People were pretty impressed with that song so we thought let’s do it.”

The group now meets regularly in the recording studio to brainstorm lyrics, form rhymes and record beats.

The band describes Australian hip hop as “its own culture” and draws inspiration from the Hilltop Hoods, Bliss n Eso and The Herd.

Immortal Mindsets held its first live performance in Maitland at Yorke Valley Hotel’s open mike day on November 1.

“They’d never had a hip hop act there but it went really well,” Jacob said.

The goal is to have an album ready by February so Immortal Mindsets can enter the Hilltop Hoods Initiative, a $10,000 grant for an emerging Australian hip hop band.

The album will take its name from the title track, Beginning of Infinity, and is all about believing in yourself and your dreams.

And the band members have some big dreams of their own.

“I love hip hop because it’s unique and ultimately I’ll be touring around with people noticing who I am, what I do and what I love,” Brendan said.

“I just want to be on stage and make people happy,” Lucas added.

For Jacob, there’s nothing better than recording songs in the studio, “I just love making music, I can’t stop smiling when we’re making songs,” he said.
