REPORT: Kenn Rogers — After years of struggling to win games in succession, the Curramulka Magpies have finally succeeded and are now in third place on the ladder, having jumped over Port Vincent and Stansbury, to be nine points clear of Stansbury.
Last Saturday, in atrocious conditions — wind and rain causing players a big headache — they defeated Warooka in a shortened game at “Windy Hill” by two shots. Marshall Thompson went down by one shot to Col Thyer 11-12, while David Thorpe and Jim Fiege played out a 15-all draw. Lyndon Watters was up 15-13 over Maurice Bennett, and Bruce Short defeated Bob Harris 10-9. Minlaton scored its first win of the season in style, a 16-pointer, defeating Port Vincent (which is going through a rough patch after a good start to the season) 109-71. The victory saw Minlaton move off the bottom of the ladder. Jamie Baker had the only loss for Minlaton, going down to Davey Jones 19-20. Geoff Frost had a 41-14 win over Ricky Bruhn, Jack Glazbrook was up four shots on Jon Skuse 23-19, and Nick Shepherd took on Corey Wildash and won 26-18. As in the first round, Yorketown had the better of Port Victoria in a weather-shortened game, winning 74-45. The only winner for Port Victoria was Trevor Sly who defeated the consistent Mark Rudduck 15-12. Steve Redding had a 19-6 win against Phillip Davies, Peter Tonkin was up 22-14 on Rick Kinnane, and Leith Daniel defeated Ken Baker 21-10. Edithburgh, at Stansbury, came away with the points once again in a game played to the full in very windy conditions. Edithburgh scored 17 premiership points and has skipped away by eight points from Yorketown at the top of the ladder. Les Diprose and Greg Nankivell played a 21-all draw, the only highlight for Stansbury. Barry Stokes defeated Des Riley 31-20, Maurice Johnson was up by five on Rob Natt 27-22, and young skipper Greg Davies defeated Ian Perry 25-19. Edithburgh’s Bob Oborn was absent due to an operation on his shoulder. DIVISION IIDivision II saw two whitewashings: Curramulka defeated Stansbury White at Stansbury, and Stansbury Blue defeated Warooka White at Warooka. Port Victoria became a force to be reckoned with, defeating Warooka Red. Edithburgh and Minlaton had good wins against Yorketown Blue and Red, respectively. This is the first time in many years that Yorketown Red has been at the bottom of the table in Div. II, after a heady run of 21 successive years as premiers. Next weekCurramulka should carry on with another win against neighbours Port Victoria and consolidate a place in the top four. Yorketown will win easily against Port Vincent, and Edithburgh will upset Minlaton’s celebrations from last week with a good win. The match of the day is at Stansbury where the home side takes on Warooka. Following losses, both sides will be out to get back on the winners’ list. Stansbury should win. |
