Report: Donald Pascoe — Moonta Red is proving to be a competitive unit, accounting for Bute at Moonta at the weekend. Bute would have pencilled it down for a win but the script did not go its way with the Reds winning on three rinks and drawing on the fourth to record one of its best wins for the season.

For the winners, Kim Bruce was 11 up; Bob Scott, for Bute, scraped a draw to gain a point for Bute.

Kadina inflicted a full-points result against Wallaroo Mines at Kadina. Despite the rain, the green was in good condition and was running quite well towards the end of the day. Best for Kadina was Phil Miller (24 up).

Wallaroo, up on three rinks, was a little too strong for a competitive Port Broughton. Terry Hudson, Wallaroo, was 14 up and notably this was the difference between the sides. Dean Dolling, for Broughton, was nine up to be its best.

In a cliff-hanger at Maitland, Moonta scraped home by a single shot. Moonta won on three rinks but Dean Prentice was 16 up for Maitland and almost snatched victory. Ian Hatcher was 10 up for Moonta to be its top skipper.

As the season’s halfway point nears, Ardrossan, away against Paskeville, scored an important win to keep in contact with the top four. Carlos Vargas was 10 up for Ardrossan to be its best; Geoff Millard, 9 up for Paskeville, was its only winner on the day.

DIVISION II

Maitland ended Moonta Blue’s winning run by inflicting a five-shot defeat at home. Best for Maitland was P. Stevens, 9 up, and C. White was 6 up for Moonta Blue.

Ardrossan, despite only winning on one rink, managed to gain the win against Paskeville due to the efforts of G. Moulds, whose 24 shot victory covered the other losing rinks. For Paskeville, B. Daniel was 7 up to be its leading skipper.

Kadina Red, away against Arthurton, scored an important win to consolidate a position in the top four. Arthurton was the pacesetter in this division early in the season but has dropped its last two games and would be looking to quickly reverse fortunes in the next couple of weeks. For Kadina, Les Wheeler was 13 up to set up the win and Peter Colliver, one up for Arthurton, was his side’s only winning rink.

Wallaroo, sharing the rinks with Port Broughton, snared a vital win by four shots on the road. Peter Millard, for Wallaroo, was 23 up; H. Harvey was Broughton’s best, 17 up.

The only two games cancelled due to rain were Alford against Kadina Black and Bute versus Wallaroo Mines. The points for these games are shared.

DIVISION III

Moonta Blue, Gold and Red, Paskeville and Wallaroo Red were the victors this week in third division.

Wallaroo Red won by 80 shots and Moonta Red by 70! Considering this competition is three rinks only, these results are rather outstanding.

MIDWEEK PENNANTS

Midweek was called off due to the weather.

TOP RINKS

Division I: P. Miller (Kadina), 24 shots up.

Division II: G. Moulds (Ardrossan), 24 shots up.

Division III: G. Male (Wallaroo Red), 37 shots up.

THIS WEEK

Titleholder Kadina tackles Moonta at Kadina on Saturday in what is shaping as a great contest.

Moonta Red is at home to Maitland and would be brim full of confidence after its good win last week.

Bute and Paskeville, both losers last week, clash at Bute and would both be keen to return to the winners’ list.

Ardrossan is at home to Port Broughton and would be confident after it has strung a couple of wins together.

Wallaroo Mines is at home to Wallaroo and it will be another tough week for the Mines but its first win for the season is just around the corner. Can it be this week?
