New play equipment is on the agenda for Yorketown-based SYP Active Kids, thanks to an $8,000 South Australian Government Recreation and Sport grant.

Organisers say the social aspect for parents, grandparents and children is also an important part of what they do. The program has been running every Friday morning during term time in the Yorketown Area School’s gym for the past 22 years, with some of their equipment almost as old! This latest funding boost will enable the group to upgrade equipment plus purchase some new pieces that will primarily be aimed at 1 to 3-year-olds. Two sessions are held each Friday, pre-schoolers 9-10 am, then Reception/Year 1 classes from surrounding schools 10-11 am. Member for Goyder Steven Griffiths dropped into the Friday, November 6, session to congratulate the group on its successful grant application and recognised some of the equipment as having been used by his own children, when his wife Donna was a member of the then Yorketown Kindergym committee. Explaining the current structure of the group, committee members Monique Warren and Narelle Richmond said they were lucky to have good support from parents who actively assist with fundraising, as well as a great working relationship with staff and students at the school. Around 15 children from Yorketown, Stansbury and Warooka currently attend each session on a regular basis; however, they’d love to welcome more families. Not only is it a great place for young children to learn new skills and improve their confidence, it also provides a perfect opportunity to form new friendships, the organisers say. Jenny Oldland |
