Big Scott Mumford started like a house on fire with a couple of crumbing goals. But, like many houses on fire, he crumbled to the ground soon after, limping almost all the way off before being stretchered for the final few metres in one of the more “I guess that was necessary?” moments of the season. He would not return, and neither would the Eagles’ hopes of victory.
Suddenly the Southerners lacked a deep target, settling instead for long-range shots which missed the mark. The Cougars were not on their A game but finally got the ball going their way and goaled instantly. The amount of effort required for that quick goal, compared with the slog it took for the Eagles to even manage a few points, did not bode well for the rest of the game.
