Port Vincent’s sheltered beaches provide ideal sailing conditions and for this reason are often used by state sailing bodies as a site for their racing program.
spptvinsailOn February 4 and 5, Port Vincent hosted three heats of the Sharpie State Champion series. Sharpies are fast sailing dinghies based on a hard chine hull (built from flat panels of plywood) developed in the 1940s and early 1950s.

The Port Vincent Sailing Club was used as the shore base and launching area and club member Doug Le Feuvre provided his ketch Nellie Rose as the committee boat. Safety support was provided by Port Vincents Flotilla 10 of the Coast Guard.

The races on Saturday were sponsored by Fujitsu Air-conditioning. The wind was a southerly breeze and 21 boats started. In addition to the sharpies, there was a race for three usuals, a design based on the sharpie lines and sail plan, but with a small cabin forward.
