MUCH of last week’s District Council of the Copper Coast meeting was spent sorting out the region’s wastewater woes.
The Copper Coast councillors have needed gumboots to wade through the mess of the region’s wastewater issues since they bubbled to the surface last May.
They are finally making progress, it’s not going to be cheap but they have really been left with no alternatives.
A new biosolids treatment facility will get the Department of Health off their back and prevent any stop work on subdivisions in Wallaroo.
At Moonta, the community wastewater management scheme has been coming on and off the backburner for many years, now it seems the issue will be dealt with, partly due to increasing pressure, again, from the Department of Health.
Once council has its CWMS designs in place, it needs to call a public meeting to explain to the community how the scheme will work and what the financial implications will be.
There have been so many ideas, plans and project budgets over the years, many people are now confused.
The Port Hughes treatment plant is being built to deal with the new developments at Moonta Bay and Port Hughes.
It’s great the Copper Coast is experiencing such significant growth; the council now needs to bring infrastructure into line to handle the additional waste.
Unfortunately, other projects will probably be shelved until these pressing wastewater issues are dealt with.
