CHRISTMAS is just five sleeps away and the festive spirit is again alive and well on Yorke Peninsula.
Congratulations to all those volunteers involved with organising Christmas carols, services, pageants and street parties.

You truly do a magnificent job and help make the season fun for not just the children, but adults too.

Bad luck to the Moonta and District Progress Association and its band of merry helpers.

No one can predict the weather (well, far enough in advance) and it was unfortunate all your hard work could not be rewarded.

With the festive season comes the holiday tourist season for the peninsula.

It is a busy time of year so please be patient. Tourists are integral to the local economy and their expenditure in the region is welcomed by local

businesses which has a ripple effect in the community.

If our small businesses are thriving, there is more chance of employment and support for community groups.

The message has been drummed in a thousand times, but please be safe on the roads. There is never a good time for an accident but it is extra heartbreaking during the festive season when it’s a time for families and celebration.

Whilst the Christmas/New Year period is all about fun and frivolity, let’s not turn it into the silly season.

It was disappointing to have a front page story in the first issue of this year reporting on negative incidents from New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Police, council and other agencies have been working hard all year to ensure similar incidents don’t reoccur.

So have a good time, get in the spirit, but stay safe and make smart decisions.
