Unfortunately, the Copper Coast Council seems to have a group of female elected members with no voice at all.
I have just retired from council after 50 years’ loyal service and have always had a keen interest in local politics. I have spoken to some female elected members about issues, only to be told by one she just sits back and goes with the flow, not wanting to rock the boat. Another said she would say yes to everything because she got what she wanted. Unfortunately, there is another female elected member who, before every council meeting, gallery members take bets as to whether she moves or not, only for her to move a motion after looking around the room to go with the majority.
The disappointing thing is three elected members have been councillors before and know every year council had a major works program in the rural area, but they seem to have ignored that in preference of expensive projects. The rural area has been let down badly due to a lack of knowledge from some councillors and a complete lack of knowledge from management, as is shown by the standard of work elsewhere in the area.
Apart from a couple of councillors who try to make a change, the rest have been the most disappointing group I can recall. In the past couple of years council has lost more than 130 years of experience and not once has that knowledge been tapped into.
I hope all ratepayers think long and hard before voting at the next elections, and the successful candidates represent the ratepayers and put personal agendas aside.
