The who’s who of American musicians rolled up in their Sunday best. The event featured a Whitney Houston tribute from Christina Aguilera, Pink and Kelly Clarkson teamed up to cover R.E.M.’s Everybody Hurts and a lifetime achievement award for Diana Ross.
The awards are given based on votes from the public and have produced some interesting results.
While I have zero musical talent, I’m going to give my two bobs worth on the winners of some of the main categories because if I’ve learned anything from the internet, everyone is an expert.
Artist of the Year: Bruno Mars.
Mars writes catchy pop tunes, he’s got slick moves and a fair set of pipes. I don’t want to take away from his achievements, but I also don’t think he should have got the gong. He was up against the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Drake and Ed Sheeran (and The Chainsmokers but I think that must have been a
typo). Long story short, it should have been Kendrick.
Collaboration of the Year: Despacito by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber.
Could not agree more, what a tune. It was up against some decent collabs including The Weeknd and Daft Punk’s Starboy, DJ Khaled with Biebs, Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne and Quavo with I’m the One and The Chainsmokers with Halsey with Closer (yes, I know I just ragged on The Chainsmokers but this is one catchy pop tune). Despacito was already a lit Latino track and with Biebs’ golden touch, is easily the best collaboration of the year.
Favourite Female Artist - Pop/Rock: Lady Gaga.
My colleague Sonny Coombs, aka Lady Gaga’s biggest fan on Yorke Peninsula, won’t be happy with this, but HOW DID SHE BEAT RIHANNA?! She’s lent her unique voice to three of the best songs of the year, singing and rapping on Kendrick Lamar’s Loyalty, NERD’s Lemon and DJ Khaled’s Wild
Thoughts. Also, the fact none of the three nominees for this category (the other being Alessia Cara) have released an album in the past year is interesting. Tell you someone who did: Lorde. More on that in a few weeks when I tell you why she made the best album of the year.
Favourite Song — Country, Favourite Album — Country, Favourite Male Artist — Country: Keith Urban.
