THE state Labor Party will oppose rate capping and instead introduce its own legislation which it claims will protect ratepayers and improve council performance.
Labor’s bill aims to heighten scrutiny and transparency of council budgets and rates, ban extravagant perks for staff, make credit card spending public, and crack down on interstate and overseas travel.
It will also establish a Local Government Commissioner to deal with council complaints and disputes.
