Tariff impacting our local farmers’ India trade

LOCAL farmers have lost out after the Indian Government announced a 30 per cent tariff on the imports of chickpeas and lentils, effective immediately, on Thursday, December 21.

This change hit Australia’s two most important pulse crops right in the middle of harvest, when export trade for the season was starting.

Pulse Australia believes there were already 200,000 tonnes, worth $150million, of Australian chickpeas and lentils in transit to India at the time, and these may be affected.
