SOME Port Broughton residents are angered at the District Council of Barunga West’s plans to replace the cement sea wall along the foreshore with a rock wall.
The proposed wall will encroach on about two metres of the beach, but council said it is the only design the Coastal Management Branch will approve.
Local business owner Greg Winen said tourism will suffer if there is little beach to utilise.
“We are going to lose some of the beach and there isn’t actually a lot of beach there now, at best there may be four metres,” Mr Winen said.
“It would be an absolute catastrophe for tourism and a majority of residents in the town would be against it.”
Council sent letters to residents who live along West Terrace outlining the plans, but Mr Winen said the proposal affects the whole town.
“It is unsafe to have stones because kids are going to try and get down them and if you jump off the wall you land on sand but imagine if you fell over on the rocks,” Mr Winen said.
“The existing wall is fine, but there are some areas which need repairing so council should fix those spots and maybe give it a render.”
