THE Department of Health has halted minor subdivisions in Wallaroo due to the town’s sewage ponds being at capacity.
Land divisions of one block into two, for instance, will not be allowed until a new wastewater treatment plant is approved.
However, two major land developments planned for the town, totalling 900 new blocks, will not be affected, according to District Council of the Copper Coast CEO Peter Harder.
A proposed treatment plant, similar to the one which will soon be built on Retallick Road, Port Hughes, would allow the town to handle the additional sewerage requirements of continued population growth.
Councillors must approve the project at tomorrow night’s (Wednesday, February 1) DCCC meeting.
The Wallaroo plant would cost $2million; DCCC is already planning to spend $25million on a larger wastewater scheme for most of Moonta, Moonta Bay and Port Hughes.
