COLIN and Joan Kelly’s devotion to improving areas around Port Vincent for the past 25 years was recognised with a KESAB community commendation award last year.
“Joan and Colin put in a huge effort and we were very pleased to see them receive the commendation for their countless volunteer hours and dedication,” Port Vincent Tidy Towns chairman Tony Bates said.
Joan Kelly describes herself as a “compulsive weeder”, and her first job in the town after moving to the area in 1984 was pulling out rampant kikuyu which covered the entire footpath adjacent their newly acquired corner block.
“After moving into our new home in 1987, we noticed a poster asking residents interested in the new Clean Up Australia campaign to come to the wharf area where they would be allotted jobs,” Mrs Kelly said.
“We asked if we could remove large clumps of native grasses on the western edge of the tennis court land, and were told by all means go ahead and that was the beginning.
