Your View: Defending Shoeboxes of Love

IN response to Thelma Young’s letter Charity (YPCT 14-8-18) in which she refers to “pretty things in shoeboxes”.

You may have been thinking of the Samaritan’s Purse charity Operation Christmas Child.

OCC is only one of the three specific purposes of this Christian mission/charity. The other two are hands-on disaster response and relief, and sending trained medical personnel to disaster areas of the world.

The shoeboxes of gifts to traumatised and needy children are packed by people in nine different countries and sent to children in 109 countries and territories. Last year more than 11 million boxes were delivered.

The organisation is highly organised worldwide and is a great force for good in the lives of the children and their families. These children have never received gifts before and it brings them hope in an often-dark existence to know someone somewhere was thinking of them and wanted to share some love.
