I had the privilege to be the first paid person to work in Harvest Corner alongside this amazing group of volunteers. That was more than 12 years ago and it was the then-council’s foresight to see the work this community-minded group had been doing for years, and not just for the immediate area but for promoting the whole of Yorke Peninsula. It was through council’s support Harvest Corner moved into the larger current premises, and now its removal may be their demise.
Some may say this group runs Harvest Corner to sell their own produce and this is partly true, but once you work alongside them it doesn’t take long to realise the amount of work and hours needed to operate this visitor information centre. This team’s passion for Harvest Corner, their community spirit and their love of YP makes Harvest Corner so successful and such a great community asset.
It would be wonderful for the current council to recognise the work Harvest Corner Visitor Information Centre does promoting tourism for YP and assisting tourists to the wonderful attractions we have on offer, and see it within their plans to help them either purchase the current building or continue to assist with rent. Maybe some council land or building which isn’t serving the community well could be sold to implement this as it would still be an investment in community.
I also applaud Minlaton Progress Association for getting on board and trying to help, it’s this community spirit that makes YP so special.
Waiting in hope,
Janet Cameron, Port Vincent
