Calicivirus release to tackle rabbit problem

JOURNALIST: Kristin Murdock

RABBIT numbers are surging in some coastal Yorke Peninsula towns, prompting Natural Resources Northern and Yorke to partner with community groups to reduce the feral rabbit population.

The Korean strain of the RHDV1-K5 calicivirus, specific to the European rabbit, has been released at several sites in Ardrossan, Stansbury and Port Vincent.

The release aims to reduce the high numbers of the pests, which have been causing damage to farms as well as parks, ovals, gardens and coastal vegetation.
