Recycling measures announced

THE state government has announced a $12.4million support package to help industry and local government cope with the increased recycling disposal charges.

Local councils were told the cost of recyclables would jump by 185 per cent, from $16 per tonne to $45 per tonne, from April as a result of the Chinese government’s policy to restrict the importation of recyclables.

Minister for Environment and Water David Speirs said the package includes $5.8million for infrastructure grants, $5m loan scheme to support projects and $800,000 for a state-wide education program.
