Bait snails before they mate

SARDI entomologist Helen Brodie has advised grain growers to bait crop pest snails now.

Stimulated by moisture, snails are becoming active after summer dormancy; baiting is most effective when snails are actively feeding but before they start mating and laying eggs.

“Even though conditions have been mostly dry, snails have been observed becoming mobile in response to light rain and overnight dews in parts of South Australia since March,” Mrs Brodie said.
