Stansbury oysters are disease free

THE oyster industry is on high alert after Pacific Oyster Mortality Syndrome was discovered in feral –  not farmed –  oysters in the Port River.

At this stage, POMS has not been detected in the state’s oyster farming areas including Stansbury, where local stock has been tested and returned a negative result.

The Port River is only 60 kilometres across the gulf, so South Australian Oyster Growers’ Association executive officer Trudy McGowan and PIRSA representatives visited the peninsula to discuss the situation with Stansbury and Coobowie growers last week.
