Your View: Wallaroo Hospital

I BELIEVE Wallaroo Hospital is only hanging on by the skin of its teeth, and there is a distinct possibility of no hospital in the future.

Do the residents of the Yorke Peninsula realise the hospital is only running by the grace of the Kadina Medical Practice doctors, staffing the hospital on a roster system?

If these doctors decide they won’t staff the hospital, as the Wallaroo and Moonta doctors have, who will run the hospital? No doctors, no hospital.

Doctors don’t want to come to the country. If they do come, they want to get back to the city as soon as possible.

At the meeting put on by Liberal candidate for Narungga Fraser Ellis last November, it was pointed out Victor Harbor Hospital couldn’t get enough doctors. They handed the problem back to the Labor government and told them to staff the hospital. After all, it is the responsibility of government to legally supply the doctors. I believe the government put on locums in the hospital. I spoke to a guy from Country Health on January 23, and he admitted they had to take over the staffing (they didn’t want to). I say congratulations to the committee for passing the buck back to the government. Why can’t the Wallaroo Hospital committee do the same thing?

I say to Yorke Peninsula residents, to get off your backsides and take action. Write to your member of parliament, also YP Country Times and express your thoughts. Also, the YP Country Times should be investigating the problems in a more serious way. I have written twice to Mr Doug Reed, chairperson of the Northern YP Health Advisory Council, and I haven’t had a response as of yet.

Give the responsibility to the government of the day, it is letting the public down.

Peter Paule, Kadina
