Wallaroo RSL centenary

Wallaroo RSL will celebrate its centenary from Wednesday to Sunday, August 1-5. In the lead-up, historian Craig Wharton will provide articles detailing locals who served in World War I. This is the second instalment of a two-part introduction to the series.

GALLIPOLI, Pozieres, Flers, Bulle­court, Fromelles, Ypres, Passchen­daele, Villers-Bretonneus Names of far-off places. Those who left our community in 1914 had never heard of them, but to our generation today they are placenames synonymous with words like sacrifice, duty, honour, courage and mateship. They were places of suffering and death.

They are names we invoke each Anzac Day and Remem­brance Day when we pay our respects as a nation to those great-hearted men and women who created the Anzac legend and those of them that did not return.
