Anniversary of Wallaroo jetty smash

CHINESE vessel Wuzhau ploughed into the Wallaroo jetty 40 years ago today (Tuesday, October 24).

The smash caused $1million damage to the jetty and gantry in 1977, with locals hearing the crash at 7.20am.

No one was injured but 200 metres of the 12-metre-high gantry came down and crushed offices, sheds and three cars. A rail line was also broken and 35m of the jetty buckled.
